If Bush Wrote a Book, it would be called…

There hasn’t been a time in history that a President has been hit with as much ridicule as George W. Bush.  Bill Clinton had his follies, but they were nothing compared to what has transpired the last 7 years, 10 months.

aXXoThis article about a Bush Autobiography actually received quite a few Diggs considering the submitter.  It would have been nice to see it hit the front page simply for the crowd-sourced continued list of alternative book titles for a Bush book.  He says he’s considering it.  Should be interesting.

Original Description:

President Bush says he has many regrets. He is even considering writing a book about his presidency. Possible titles? Economy: Gone with the Wind. Or: Iraqis are from Mars, Afghans are from Uranus. Or: Me and Dick

The Astronomy Picture of the Day has been an amazing and anticipated thing for some time now.  NASA posts 1 image at 9:00 PM pst every night, give or take 5 minutes.  The images are normally stunning and are absolutely unique to the post in almost every circumstance.

It is one of the most Diggable pieces of regular content on the Internet.  There are a couple of problems, though, that make it miss sometimes.  First, the timing - dozens of top users know exactly when it will be posted.  Second, the place - the URL string is date-stamped, so it can be anticipated when it will be posted.

Another Tale of a Digger Scorned

added by JD Rucker on October 12th, 2008

My timing was bad, the first article I was going to get popular and to the front page ended up getting me banned. I linked my article to DIGGBOSS API (checkfriends - http://checkfriends.appspot.com/script) that allows you ONLY share an article to users who have not dugg the article. From what I understand this uses the Digg API and shouldn’t be labeled a “script” but I was banned anyway, along with a lot of users who followed my post (Please Stop Reshouting Me - http://www.thejimgaudet.com/blog/archives/207).

This is not my personal blog; nor, is it JD’s.  It’s starting to feel like it, though.  We need contributors, and in order to satisfy that end, perhaps we need to expand the mission of this blog a little further.  You may not have thought it was possible, but I assure you; it is.

Our first and primary mission was to highlight those stories on Digg that, for one reason or another, did not make the front page.  It was a result of being frustrated at and confused by an obscure algorithm that no one could even begin to understand.  How does one story get picked over another?  Is the decision to promote one piece over another truly being crowdsourced?

Through our posts we highlighted apparent flaws in Digg’s algorithm, its system design, and its community.  Not satisfied with that and feeling rebellious, JD decided to highlight the utter crap that managed to be promoted to Digg’s homepage.  Thus, even from its earliest days, this blog’s mission has always been two fold:

1) To highlight those stories that may have deserved to have gone popular.

2) To highlight the garbage that manages to become popular, but should really have not.

Mostly, we added human intellect and judgment to the selection of stories to go popular that Digg’s algorithm could not. Read more…

Authors, Concepts Needed for Popfail

added by JD Rucker on September 30th, 2008

This is an open call for writers.  We need you.  The original concept of highlighting stories that should have been on the front page of social media sites but that didn’t quite make it is starting to lose steam.  We will continue to do it, of course, but we want more.

Lots more.

mission_title Authors, Concepts Needed for Popfail

We want this site to spark the interests of the readers out there who want more from a blog.  There is a distinct need to expand on our successes and bring this blog to the next level.

It has done well so far.  It achieved a PageRank of 4 in a relatively short time without unnatural link-building.  The traffic has been wonderful and we have seen 3 of our posts hit the front page of Digg, including one story that had over 3000 Diggs.  Our subscribers are moving up nicely and consistently, but still… Read more…

The Truth About DiggBoss, part 1

spider The Truth About DiggBoss, part 1It seems that, other than an interview and story on Read Write Web about Zaibatsu getting banned, that Digg will not allow any of the stories from the banned to make it to their front page.  This story from Nowsourcing tells a pretty comprehensive picture of a major fallacy in their recent ban-spree.  It received nearly 300 diggs and 53 comments, but had no chance of hitting the front page even before it was submitted. Zaibatsu Banned

added by JD Rucker on September 20th, 2008

A recent reply by Reg “Zaibatsu” Saddler on Social News Central sparked a lot of interest in the social media world.  There were invitations for interviews, mentions of revolts, consoling words, outrage, and the occasional basher all throughout the comments.

In our world of high tech CG, robots that paint, and virtual reality that can seem as real as… real, sometimes the things that amaze us the most are those things that take time, that start with something completely simple and turn them into things that are amazing.

Below are perfect examples of human ingenuity and patience that express the creative potential of being alive. Here are some samples, but check out Neocrisis for all 25 of them.

There aren’t a whole lot of things that you can say.  While there seems to be some pretty nifty features available now, this just isn’t what everyone was waiting for.  Some people we’ve spoken to about it are downright angry.

I just dont think theres anything else that needs to be said. The top story on the front page of the new Propeller says it all.
