With companies such as Google, Verizon, Cisco, and Hewlett-Packard protecting their interests by beating patent trolls to the punch, the landscape of big business has changed. They have created a holding company called Allied Security Trust to buy patents and license them to consortium.
While many may consider this “big business trying to keep small business down”, there have been many instances over recent years where lawsuits have been filed against companies with the sole purpose of garnering a large settlement so the companies can avoid the troubles of litigation.
The documented cases are often disgusting, including one moment when the creators of Blackberry nearly had to cease operations over a silly suit. There are times when large businesses act in ways that display greed and malice. Most of the of the things that this move will protect are more along the lines of keeping them from being taken advantage of because of their size.
Original Description:
A consortium of technology heavyweights may be banding together to buy up patents before the trolls get their claws on them.
