popFAIL Version 2.0

added by JD Rucker on June 22nd, 2008

At popFAIL, our goal was to create a place to highlight stories submitted to Digg that didn’t quite have enough to make it to the front page. Because Digg takes the submitter into account as much as (and possibly more than) the quality of the content, there are often lower quality stories, videos, and images that make it over higher quality content.

This holds true for most social media sites. Propeller, for example, can be gamed through their message system, sending spammy content to the front page. Reddit requires a bit more to game, as their user base and algorithm are good at squashing spam, but it can still be done through proxy-based multiple accounts.

Mixx seems to have it under control through an extremely passionate core of users who help to keep spam off the front page, but even there, things slip through.

Other than Reddit, a new user has a difficult time ever seeing their content on the front page without a tremendous amount of luck. To that end, we are expanding our reach to look into other social media sites and highlight content from the broadest of ranges.

At this point, we had a crawl from StarWarsCrawl.com - but the site has been taken down by LucasArts.  It’s a pity, really, because it was the best way to make this particular news interesting.  Instead, all we have is words.  Sorry for the inconvenience.
